Five words, all with the same vowel sound, and yet all spelt differently. We confident spellers take this for granted. As a Primary teacher, the trick is to find ways to get kids to commit spelling choices to memory. I use a phonemic approach; other teachers might use something else.
By the way, there are 20 vowels and 24 consonants in Australian english.
